Age spots are really two types of skin discolorations and include the solar lentigo and flat seborrheic keratoses. Age spots are variably called sun spots, liver spots, sun freckles, and old age spots. The solar lentigo is generally considered to be part of the progression that can result in malignant melanoma, but how often this occurs is not known with any certainty. A skin biopsy may be necessary to help determine if a pigmented lesion is a melanoma. Otherwise treatment is not usually necessary. These lesions can be faded by bleach creams, liquid nitrogen, tricholoroacetic acid, and lasers, especially the GentleLase.
